State Officer Information

WHY SHOULD I?

Running for and holding a State Office is exciting and challenging. The rewards are many:
  • Development of Life Long leadership skills
  • Learn how to work as part of a team
  • Personal satisfaction and growth
  • Travel to new places and meet exciting people
  • Plan and execute the New Hampshire Leadership and State Career Development Conference.
  • Visit and work with many high schools
  • Recognition for Chapter community work

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS?

The qualifications to run for a State Office are:
  • Active paid membership in an affiliated New Hampshire DECA high school division chapter
  • Has held a responsible position at one time at the chapter level
  • Is recommended by the chapter and school.
  • >Can manage priorities due to conflicting activities.

WHAT ARE THE OFFICES?

There are no office position at this time in New Hampshire DECA. The State Officer is considered part of the "State Officer Team" They will all be recognized as equals.

HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED?

State Officers are required to attend the following meetings:
  • State Officer Training at the International Conference held after you are elected
  • NH CTSO State Officer Training held in August
  • State Officer Meetings held about twice a month could be more, depending on time of year
  • State Leadership Conference held in October
  • North Atlantic Regional Conference in November
  • CTSO day held in February
  • State Career Development Conference in March
  • Visits to schools and other organizations as requested by the State Advisor

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

The State Association does reimburse some expenses for carrying out an officer's duties: At a minimum each officer should expect the following expenses:
  • Coordinated clothing to match with the DECA Blazer (provided by chapter)
  • North Atlantic Regional Conference. New Hampshire DECA will cover up to $200.00 in expenses
  • State Career Development Conference. New Hampshire DECA will cover the Hotel. State Officer is responsible for registration.
  • International Career Development Conference.
  • State Officers are encouraged to seek financial support from their Local Chapter whenever possible.

HOW MUCH WILL MY LOCAL ADVISOR BE INVOLVED?

Your local advisors role will be to:
  • Act as a consultant for you
  • Provide references and information
  • Follow up with you on your responsibilities
  • Guide you in your year as a State Officer

IF I AM ELECTED, WHAT TRAINING WILL I RECEIVE?

Training for State Officers begins at the International Conference and will continue in the summer at the CTSO training.
The areas of training will be:
  • Public speaking
  • Meeting and greeting people
  • Leadership and Management
  • Presenting

WHERE DO I GO FOR INFORMATION IN PREPARATION FOR THE SCREENING INTERVIEW?

I AM INTERESTED, WHAT DO I DO NOW?

You Should:
  • Talk to your parents, advisor, vocational director or principal, and employer to discuss the responsibilities and activities.
  • Obtain permission for possible absences from school and family activities.
  • Obtain application from advisor or on the website
  • Complete the application and mail it to the State Advisor along with your letters of recommendation.
  • Plan to attend the State Officer screening Interview.
